ABOUT COMMERCIAL O&M

Protecting 25 years of generation revenue.

Solar PV is one of the lowest-maintenance generation assets a business will ever own — but "low" maintenance is not "no" maintenance. The wrong O&M strategy can erode yield by 5–15% per year before anyone notices, costing tens of thousands of pounds over a 25-year lifetime. The right strategy keeps a well-installed system within 3% of its design yield throughout its life and catches the one mid-life event — inverter replacement around year 12 — as a scheduled lifecycle item rather than an emergency.

Our O&M contracts are structured around four activities: annual physical inspection (visual + IR thermography + electrical test), continuous remote monitoring against PVsyst-modelled yield baselines, preventative servicing (DC connector retorquing, surge-protection replacement, weather-seal checks), and corrective maintenance on faults flagged either by monitoring alerts or by annual inspection. We carry insurance-backed workmanship warranties that survive even if FPT itself ceased trading — long-term continuity is built into the contract structure.

At Future Power Team we service every commercial system we've installed since 2019 plus a growing book of "orphan" systems from other Yorkshire installers that have wound up. Contracts run from £450/year for an annual inspection on a small commercial site, up to bespoke full-managed contracts for 1 MWp-class industrial arrays. Request a free site assessment and we'll evaluate your existing system or upcoming install — quote turned around within 7 days.

O&M CONTRACT TIERS

Three tiers, every contract bespoke.

Annual O&M cost scales with system size, monitoring depth and SLA. The tiers below are indicative reference points. Every real contract is priced after a site survey — current condition, remoteness, monitoring infrastructure and any existing data history all affect the rate.

BASIC — ANNUAL INSPECTION
From £450/yr
50–100 kWp

Annual physical inspection (full DC + AC test, IR thermography of strings, structural / weather-seal check), remote monitoring setup, performance report. Replacement parts billed separately.

Enquire
Most popular
STANDARD — QUARTERLY MONITORING
From £1,200/yr
100–250 kWp

Annual physical visit + quarterly remote performance review + 24-hour fault triage + first-line technician response within 48 hours. Performance-degradation analysis. Most common tier for mid-size sites.

Enquire
PREMIUM — FULL MANAGED
P.O.E.
250 kWp+

All-inclusive O&M for larger installs: physical visits 2–4× per year, real-time SCADA monitoring, fixed-fee inverter replacement schedule (years 10–15), insurance-claim handling, performance-guarantee underwriting. Bespoke contract terms.

Enquire

Indicative pricing for systems installed in their original condition with standard inverter platforms. Premium SLAs (4-hour on-site response, real-time SCADA, performance-guarantee underwriting) priced separately. Replacement parts (panels, optimisers, inverters) billed outside the contract unless a fixed-fee replacement clause is added.

WHAT O&M ACTUALLY COVERS

Four activities that protect ROI.

Solar O&M is straightforward when broken into its four constituent activities — none mysterious, all measurable, all part of every commercial contract we deliver.

01

Annual inspection — physical + electrical

Every O&M contract starts with an annual on-site visit: visual check of every panel (cracked glass, hot-spots, bird-pecking damage), IR thermography of strings, full DC isolation test, AC output verification, structural mounting check, weather-seal inspection on roof penetrations. A 100 kWp inspection is typically 1 day on site + 1 day reporting.

02

Continuous performance monitoring

Every modern inverter (SolarEdge, FoxESS, Sigenergy, SMA, Fronius) ships with built-in monitoring that pushes real-time performance to a cloud portal. We set up alerting against expected-yield baselines — a 10% under-performance triggers an investigation before it costs you a winter's revenue. Quarterly performance reports show actual vs PVsyst-projected yield, plus benchmark against weather data.

03

Preventative + corrective maintenance

Preventative: scheduled cleaning (rarely needed in UK — annual physical inspection usually catches dirt issues), DC connector torque-checks, mounting bracket retightening, surge-protection device replacement at 5-year intervals. Corrective: inverter fault diagnosis, panel replacement, optimiser replacement (SolarEdge), wiring repairs, MCB / fuse replacement.

04

Mid-life inverter replacement scheduled

Solar panels last 25-30 years; inverters typically last 10-15. Inverter replacement is the one mid-life cost event factored into every commercial system lifecycle — we schedule replacement around year 12 by default (sooner if the manufacturer warranty has expired and faults appear). A like-for-like replacement is a 1-day technician visit at ~10-15% of original system cost. We carry stock of every brand we install.

SCOPE OPTIONS

Six activities we can include in an O&M contract.

Different sites need different O&M depth. A clean industrial roof in an urban estate needs less than a coastal poultry shed in salt-spray conditions. We tailor scope to your site — these are the most common activities we include.

REMOTE MONITORING

Real-time SCADA + yield alerts

Every system we install ships with cloud-based inverter monitoring. We set up automatic alerts on under-performance, downtime and string-level faults. For larger sites (250 kWp+) we offer real-time SCADA dashboards with monthly customer-facing reports.

IR THERMOGRAPHY

Hot-spot detection at panel level

Annual infrared thermography survey identifies panels with cracked cells, soldering defects, bird-pecking damage or bypass-diode failure before they propagate. Drone-mounted IR thermography is the standard tool — surveys a 100 kWp array in 30 minutes.

INVERTER REPLACEMENT

Mid-life (years 10-15) lifecycle event

Inverter replacement is scheduled as part of every commercial lifecycle plan — typically year 10-15 depending on manufacturer warranty. Like-for-like replacement is a 1-day job at ~10-15% of original system cost. Smart contracts include a fixed-fee replacement clause.

PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE

Underwritten yield insurance

For larger systems with bank-financed projects, we offer performance-guarantee underwriting via specialist insurers — a contractual commitment to deliver minimum annual kWh, with insurance backstopping the shortfall. Useful for PPA-funded installs where the bank needs yield certainty.

CLEANING (RARELY NEEDED)

Only for dusty / coastal / industrial sites

UK rainfall handles panel cleaning for 80% of installs. For sites in dusty environments (cement works, agricultural drying), coastal locations (salt spray) or heavily industrial areas (carbon particulate), annual professional cleaning recovers 3-7% of lost yield. We assess on annual inspection.

STRUCTURAL + WEATHER-SEAL

Annual roof-penetration check

On standing-seam or trapezoidal roofs, the most common long-term failure mode is weather-seal degradation around penetrations. Annual inspection includes IR thermography of penetrations, visual check of EPDM gaskets, and resealing as required. Catches leaks before they reach the building interior.

ON-SITE O&M — WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE

Annual inspection, from rooftop to inverter cabinet.

A typical 100 kWp commercial O&M visit covers panel-level inspection (IR thermography + visual), inverter logs and cabinet checks, structural mounting + weather-seal review, and full DC isolation testing. Documentation goes into the annual performance report your insurer + lender both expect to see.

YORKSHIRE-WIDE O&M ROUTES

Coastal, urban, upland — we cover them all.

Yorkshire's diverse geography means our O&M routes cover ground that few other installers match. Annual inspection rounds run from coastal sites on the Holderness peninsula (where salt spray buildup actually does justify cleaning) to upland Pennine farms (where high wind loads make mounting integrity a more important inspection target than panel soiling), to dense urban industrial estates in Leeds and Sheffield (where carbon particulate from nearby roads is the main yield-loss driver).

We carry stock of every major panel and inverter brand we install — Aiko, JinkoSolar, JA Solar panels; FoxESS, SolarEdge, Sigenergy, Enphase, SMA, Fronius, Huawei inverters — in our Yorkshire warehouse for 48-hour replacement. The mid-life inverter replacement event (year 10-15) is the single biggest scheduled lifecycle cost on any commercial system; we plan for it from year 1 by carrying compatible replacement stock and by writing fixed-fee replacement clauses into premium O&M contracts.

For systems originally installed by other companies that have wound up, we offer "orphan adoption" packages — one-off site survey + snagging review + adoption into rolling O&M. See our commercial hub for the full operations brief, our funding page for how O&M costs are typically capitalised, and our SolarEdge installers page — SolarEdge optimiser-based systems are particularly straightforward to monitor and maintain because of the per-module data granularity.

O&M FAQS

The questions we get most on O&M.

Honest answers about commercial solar maintenance — cost, frequency, what inspection covers, monitoring, panel and inverter replacement, cleaning, fault response SLAs and what happens if your original installer has wound up.

Request an O&M assessment
How much does commercial solar operations and maintenance cost? +
Indicative pricing: annual inspection only £450/yr for a 50–100 kWp system; quarterly-monitored contract £1,200/yr for 100–250 kWp; full managed O&M is bespoke for 250 kWp+. Per-kWp installed, annual O&M typically costs £4-£12/kWp depending on tier and remoteness. Includes annual inspection, monitoring setup, performance reporting and first-line fault response. Replacement parts (panels, optimisers, inverters) billed separately unless covered by a fixed-fee replacement clause.
How often does a commercial solar system need maintenance? +
Annual physical inspection is the baseline — full DC + AC test, IR thermography, structural and weather-seal check. Cleaning is rarely needed (UK rainfall handles it for most sites). Inverter replacement is the one major mid-life event, typically year 10-15. Day-to-day, the system is autonomous — modern inverters self-diagnose and push alerts to our monitoring portal so we know about issues before you do.
What does an O&M inspection actually cover? +
A typical 100 kWp annual inspection includes: visual check of every panel for cracks / soiling / bird damage; IR thermography of all strings to identify hot-spots; full DC isolation test; AC output verification against expected yield; inverter log review; surge-protection device test; mounting bracket and rail torque check; roof-penetration weather-seal inspection; cable-management review. Output: a detailed report with photos, recommendations and any remedial work quoted separately.
How is solar performance monitored remotely? +
Every modern inverter (SolarEdge, FoxESS, Sigenergy, SMA, Fronius, Huawei) ships with cloud-based monitoring that uploads 5-15-minute performance data to a portal. We configure alerting against PVsyst-projected baselines — under-performance, downtime, string-level faults all trigger automatic notifications to our triage team. For string inverters we monitor at string level; for SolarEdge / Enphase / FoxESS we monitor at per-module level — catches single-panel issues immediately.
When do inverters need replacing? What does that cost? +
Inverters typically last 10-15 years vs the 25-30 year lifetime of the panels themselves. Most modern commercial inverters carry 10-year manufacturer warranties; some offer 12-year warranties on larger commercial-grade hardware. Replacement is a 1-day technician visit at roughly 10-15% of the original system cost (so ~£7,000-£10,000 for a 100 kWp system). Our O&M contracts can include a fixed-fee replacement clause that smooths this lifecycle cost.
What if a panel fails or gets damaged? +
Modern panels carry 25-year performance warranties (≥80% output at year 25) and 10-12 year product warranties. If a panel fails under warranty, the manufacturer covers parts; we handle the labour to replace it (typically a 2-hour visit). For accidental damage (storm impact, vandalism) the panel cost is covered by your buildings insurance — we provide the quote and replacement service. Stock of common panels (Aiko, JinkoSolar, JA Solar) held in our Yorkshire warehouse for 48-hour replacement.
Do solar panels need cleaning? +
In the UK, generally no — natural rainfall keeps most installs clean enough that the cleaning cost would exceed the recovered yield. Exceptions: sites in dusty environments (cement works, dry agricultural sites with grain handling), heavily industrial locations (carbon particulate), coastal sites (salt spray buildup) and any site within 500m of busy roads. For these sites, annual professional cleaning recovers 3-7% of otherwise-lost yield and pays back well. We assess the need annually as part of standard inspection.
What's the difference between preventative and corrective maintenance? +
Preventative maintenance is scheduled work that stops problems before they happen — annual inspection, DC connector retorquing, surge-protection replacement every 5 years, weather-seal recoating. Corrective maintenance is fixing things after they break — inverter fault repair, panel replacement, optimiser swap, wiring repairs. A well-maintained system is 80% preventative + 20% corrective; a neglected system is the inverse and loses 5-15% of yield per year.
Can I monitor the system myself? +
Yes — every inverter platform we install ships with a customer-facing app or web portal showing live generation, consumption, export and historical performance. SolarEdge mySolarEdge, FoxESS Cloud, Sigenergy mySigen, Enphase Enlighten, SMA Sunny Portal, Fronius Solar.web — all free, all give you the same data we see (sometimes more detail). Useful for day-to-day awareness, but our O&M layer adds expert interpretation: a 7% summer yield drop might be normal weather variation or might be a degrading panel string — we know which.
What happens if my installer goes out of business? +
Our O&M contracts are portable — we'll service systems installed by other companies subject to a one-off site survey and snagging review. The annual inspection report comprehensively documents the system so a future maintenance partner could pick up the contract cleanly. For Future Power Team customers, we carry insurance-backed workmanship warranties that survive even if FPT itself were to wind up — see our about page for the detail. Long-term continuity is built into the contract structure.
How quickly do you respond to faults? +
Standard contract: 24-hour acknowledgment, 48-hour first-line technician visit. Premium contract: same-day acknowledgment, next-business-day technician visit. For genuine site-down events (full system offline) we triage immediately by remote diagnostic; many "faults" turn out to be transient inverter restarts that self-clear within hours. For mission-critical sites (data centres, pharma, food production) we offer bespoke SLAs down to 4-hour on-site response.
Is O&M included in the original install warranty? +
No — the original install carries a 5-year insurance-backed workmanship warranty (covering installation defects) plus the manufacturer warranties on hardware (typically 10-25 years on panels, 10-12 years on inverters). O&M is separate — an ongoing service contract that ensures the system continues to perform optimally over its 25-year lifetime. Most customers sign a 5-year initial O&M contract at commissioning, then renew or renegotiate at the 5-year mark.
